Library fills research gap

Susan Klopper

When Zubin Mogul 02MBA approached Susan Klopper, executive director of the Goizueta Business Library, about leading a research skills workshop at his company, Klopper immediately accepted the task. Mogul serves as senior associate for ING Americas risk management department in Atlanta, handling a portion of the training for the new MBA hires. He says that he sensed that not all of the recruits in ING’s global management program were fully aware of the many research tools available to the corporate executive.

Considering the corporate background of many of the business librarians at Goizueta, including Klopper’s previous stint as director of the business information center for Arthur Andersen, Mogul says he knew it would be easy for them to understand the corporate context of the information needed. Klopper adds, “Zubin had such a positive experience while at Goizueta, and continued to contact the library after he graduated to facilitate his corporate research.” The workshop seemed to be a natural outgrowth of the library’s mission to its students and alums.

Klopper led the half-day workshop in June 2005 on site at ING, highlighting popular researching tools, in addition to ways of developing an audit trail of research. Since the Goizueta Business Library deals with the most up-to-the-minute research, even one recent Goizueta grad and new ING recruit, Mousumi Chinara ’05MBA, an associate in investment management at the company, says the workshop allowed her “to expand researching skills critical to the job.”

While the Goizueta Business Library has no formalized program to provide research help in the corporate setting, Klopper notes, “We’re very much interested in extending our relationship with alumni and developing more of a relationship with them in their corporate environment.” Mogul adds, “This sort of effort feeds recruiting. There were a number of ING management members sitting in on the workshop, including the head of HR for ING Americas, and they were impressed. The event led to the hiring of a number of Goizueta grads as interns and trainees.”

Considering the success of the training, Mogul plans to approach library staff and ING management to coordinate another training session in the near future.
