My fellow alumni and friends,
Now that we’ve reached the end of our journey, it is time to celebrate our accomplishments. While we are waiting for the champagne to be poured, I want to issue a heartfelt acknowledgement to everyone who has helped make the goal of the Goizueta Leadership Alliance a reality.
There are too many names to list in this brief letter. I hope I’ll have the opportunity to thank each of you in person—the numerous volunteers, alumni, friends, corporate partners, foundations, parents, students, and faculty. But if I don’t, you should know that we would have nothing to celebrate without you.
Five years ago we adopted Dean Tom Robertson’s vision and strategic plan to be one of the top business schools in the world. We never looked back, and it is now very clear that we are well on our way. All you have to do is look at the numbers—our rankings are up, we’ve increased faculty, entering students’ scores are higher, and we have launched several exciting new programs. The world is taking notice, and we’ve only just begun.
It has been my honor to serve as chairman of the Goizueta Leadership Alliance for the last five years. I am looking forward to the next five years, as we continue to achieve, grow, and reap the bounty of hard work and our investments.
Now for the champagne . . . please join me in a toast: to the future of Goizueta Business School.
Sincerely

John Spiegel ’65MBA

Chairman, Goizueta Leadership Alliance
Leadership Alliance exceeds goal
In 1999, a group of motivated individuals organized the Goizueta Leadership Alliance, a five-year effort of ambitious goals to enhance excellence at Goizueta Business School. Specifically, they outlined a commitment to
help Goizueta:
• Increase the number of world-class faculty
• Establish specialized research centers
• Launch a prestigious PhD program
• Expand the Executive Education Program
• Establish a Modular Executive MBA
program
Today, through the efforts of dedicated volunteers and staff, the $50 million goal has been met and surpassed, reaching a final total of $56,495,554. These funds are earmarked for
a long list of worthy endeavors, including endowment, scholarships, research, and capital improvements. The most visible reminder of the Alliance’s success will be the new building addition, set to break ground on March 18, 2004, and completed July 2005.
The Alliance theme was Capturing the Future—Building Intellectual Capital. During the past five years, Alliance members worked closely with Goizueta’s partners in the academic and business communities to forge stronger relationships. There is already a strong return on this investment, as witnessed by the
following:
• Total faculty increased 58 percent to 86, including 10 new chaired professors.
• Total students increased 24 percent to 1,088; average GMAT is 675 and average SAT is 1360.
• PhD and Modular Executive MBA Programs were created and launched.
• MBA Program ranked 16th (Financial Times) and 22nd (BusinessWeek).
• BBA Program ranked 14th (U.S. News & World Report).
• Executive MBA Program ranked 10th (BusinessWeek and Financial Times).
• The Center for Entrepreneurship and Corporate Growth was created.
There are many notable events in a fundraising endeavor of this size, and unfortunately,
not all can be listed in this article. Among the
highlights:
• The Goizueta Foundation, one of the school’s strongest allies, visibly increased its commitment to the school by pledging $10 million to the construction of the new building addition, to be known as The Goizueta Foundation Center for Research and Doctoral Education. The Foundation also provided the funding for three endowed chairs—the Goizueta Chair in Marketing and Digital Communications, the Goizueta Chair in International Business, and the Goizueta Chair in Finance, four MBA scholarships, and
$2 million in endowment for PhD
fellowships.
• The Robert W. Woodruff Foundation contributed $5 million, and an anonymous Atlanta foundation contributed $2 million toward the construction of The Goizueta Foundation Center.
• Goizueta also received principal planned gifts from two anonymous donors in the form of charitable remainder trusts and from Major General and Mrs. Ralph T. Holland. Other planned gifts for scholarships and unrestricted purposes were made by Phil ’66C-’76MBA-’76JD and Daphne Reese, Bernard Gray, Bill Brosius ’85BBA, and Tara Lyn Whitehead ’93MBA.
• An anonymous donor gave the school a chair in finance and an MBA Scholarship Fund.
• John and Lucy Cook endowed a chair in information strategy.
• Solon ’57BBA-’58MBA and Marianna Patterson ’61C made a significant joint commitment to name the new plaza, or business-arts “green,” that will be created by the completion of The Goizueta Foundation Center.
• W. Cliff Oxford’s ’94EMBA impressive
$5 million, multi-year commitment will name the Executive MBA.
• The Estate of John Robson made a gift
of scholarship endowment.
• Leadership Alliance Chairman John Spiegel ’65MBA set an impressive bar for alumni and friends with his significant commitment.
• Earl Dolive ’40BBA, retired chairman of Genuine Parts, committed a generous amount for the building expansion, in addition to other gifts.
• J. Coleman Budd ’50BBA made a multi-year gift that will name the new dean’s suite and support the Fund for Excellence.
• The Coca-Cola Company supported many initiatives including Knowledge@Emory and scholarships for a total of $275,000.
• An anonymous member of the Emory community gave a PhD fellowship as part of a planned gift.
• SunTrust Bank encouraged giving from its Goizueta and Emory alumni by matching all gifts three-to-one. The total, $250,000, will name the SunTrust Classroom.
• The MBA class of 2003 redefined the concept of a class gift, with almost 100 percent of its members contributing more than $121,000 to establish an endowed nonprofit internship.
• Rick ’83BBA and Debra Rieder ’85BBA named a classroom in the new facility.
• The Adler Foundation (Lou, Gail, and Marc ’95BBA-’96MBA) named a classroom in the new facility.
• Harry L. Gilham Jr.’s ’51BBA name will grace the executive dining room in the new facility.
• Jim ’65BBA and Celia ’65C Ferman will be recognized for their generous gift in a first-floor classroom.
• KPMG gave $130,000 in support of Knowledge@Emory and the Dean’s Speaker Series.
• Kimberly-Clark Corporation committed $100,000 to name an Executive Conference Room.
• Alan Dabbiere gave a generous gift of stock to support faculty research.
• Kurt Salmon and Associates gave $150,000 for scholarships.
• Doug Matthews ’80EMBA pledged to add to his scholarship endowment and be a founding angel for the Center for Entrepreneurship.
• The UPS Foundation supported faculty research and the building expansion.
“We are very happy with the progress made
by the Leadership Alliance,” says Raymond Reynolds ’97MBA, associate dean for development and external relations. “We plan to celebrate, thank our donors, and get ready for the next major fundraising initiative in support of Goizueta.”
Although the Alliance was successful, our school has more work to do. Two of the school’s programs are ranked in the “Top 10” and there is still room for the MBA Program to grow. In addition, Goizueta still seeks funding for several new centers of excellence, a simulated trading floor, and the completion of the building expansion.
“The school has laid the foundation for an impressive future,” says Reynolds. “University and school leadership have very high aspirations for Goizueta Business School. We look forward to working with our alumni and friends to continue our remarkable progress over the next several years.”

Kontaridis joins development staff
Melissa Kontaridis has joined the Development Office staff as senior associate director of development. Kontaridis brings to Goizueta a solid background in educational development and a track record of working with individual and corporate donors to build strong relationships.
She began her career at her alma mater, Rollins College, later moving to the University of Florida, and most recently, the University of North Florida (UNF) in Jacksonville. There she served as development director for the College of Education and Human Services and later, director of major gifts. During her tenure at UNF’s College of Education and Human Services, Kontaridis more than doubled the number of productive board volunteers, expanded the network of supporters, and increased per year major gift contributions more than seven fold. In her position as director of major gifts, she managed the day-to-day operations of the UNF Foundation, worked closely with the Planned Giving Office, and nurtured out-of-state major gift opportunities.
Kontaridis holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Rollins College and a specialist and master’s degree in education from the University of Florida.
Rieder classroom honors fortieth

Debra Lieb Rieder ’85BBA got quite a surprise for her fortieth birthday. On a recent visit to Atlanta from their home in New Jersey, her husband, Rick Rieder ’83BBA, walked her into Goizueta Business School and unveiled a plaque announcing the “Rick and Debra Rieder Classroom.”
“It was a very touching moment,” says Debra, “I’ll never forget it. He wouldn’t tell me what was going on.”
Rick and Debra have a special connection to Emory and Goizueta. As business school students, they met at a Chi Phi fraternity party and ended up going out to dinner that very evening. Rick was two years ahead of her and recently had transferred to the school. “That was a big year in my life,” he says, “and this is an important milestone for Debra.
I thought this would be the best way to recognize it.”
Debra graduated first in her class. The couple returned north—Debra is originally from New Jersey, and Rick is from New York—and attended graduate school. Rick is now head of Global Credit for Lehman Brothers in New York, and Debra focuses her energies on the couple’s two daughters: Melanie, age ten, and Danielle, age eight.
The classroom honoring Debra and Rick will be located on the third floor of Goizueta’s building addition. The building groundbreaking will take place on March 18.
